Hand-lettered Plates

Something Old / Something New - Hand-lettered vintage plate workshop
Turn something old and beautiful into something new and unique!
Give a little hand-lettered love to a beautiful vintage side plate.
Using specialist ceramics pens, learn the techniques of faux calligraphy to letter your own upcycled statement plate and hang it proudly on your wall.
Calligraphy alphabets, hand-lettering inspiration and a variety of templates are all provided.
Once you’ve done one, you’ll be scouring vintage shops for more beauties you can add your own messages to!
Plant Terrarium

Let your creativity flow by joining Redcar-based House of Foliage and learn how to make their infamous ‘Life’s a Beach’ Air Plant Terrarium.

Mischievous Kittens Embroidery

Join Christine Leech from The Sewyeah Social Club in this fun and colourful embroidery workshop to make your own kitten ornament (and secret brooch)
Using beautiful 100% wool felt you will learn simple embroidery stitches and how to create a 3D felt ornament.
Christine always try to be as sustainable as possible, using pre-loved and kinder to the environment materials where possible. If you have any fabric scraps suitable for stuffing then do bring them along!
Embroidery with Beads & Sequins

Love embroidery but sometimes think your work could do with a bit more sparkle?
Don’t love embroidery but do like all things shiny?
This two hour workshop run by Christine Leech is for you!! Learn some new techniques to working with beads and sequins. After practicing with a variety of techniques you will have time to play with your new found skills to create a mini abstract design.
All materials provided, no experience necessary, just don’t forget your glasses if needed!!


Aromatherapy

Make your own oil blend with Vino Subramaniam from Diya Wellness
A wonderful introduction to aromatherapy and the benefits of using essential oils. Vino from Diya Wellness will share her expertise on measuring, blending and using essential oils safely. She will then guide you in making your own blend using pure essential oils which can be used at home as a diffuser oil or home scent.
This workshop is a brilliant introduction to the benefits of essential oils, demystifying the process of blending and giving you useful tips on how to use your blend at home and incorporating it into your body care products.
Cyanotype

This Cyanotype workshop would be a perfect experience to have fun this summer.
It's where art meets science!!! We will experiment with some paper shapes, flower press and sun!
Silvina will be leading this 2 hour workshop where you will learn the tecqniue of cyanotype, which is one of the oldest photographic printing process in the history of photography.
The distinctive feature of the print is its shade of cyan blue, which results from its exposure to ultraviolet light (the SUN!)

3D Papercutting

This workshop is ideal for beginners who are interested in learning the basics of 3D Paper Cutting. Paper Cutting is a fast growing trend and a great way of creating designs to brighten up your home.
During this two hour workshop you will learn how to use a scalpol knife to cut intricate designs from existing templates. You will learn various techniques which Silvina will talk you through step by step, and will be encouraged to experiment with colours and textures using a selection of papers to create your piece.
Don’t worry some of the letters will be pre-cut so you can finish this project in 2 hours. You will create your own HELLO sign in paper.
Your work can will be displayed in a dome, which is included in the workshop.
Silvina runs My Papercut Forest and has been a paper artist for 11 years and has been published in several books and publications. She is an illustrator and graphic designer, paper cutter, a very experienced teacher who is excited to pass on her skills to other makers.

Kogin Pincushion

Kogin is also called counted thread sashiko, originally from Japan.
During this 2-hour workshop, you will be able to learn the basic techniques of Kogin and choose your own colour thread to make two different sizes of pin cushions with different patterns.
In this 2 hour session, you will stitch together with Yiran to explore the beauty of slow stitching Sashiko.

Maio Wax Resist

Join Yiran to learn the unique dyeing technique from the Miao ethnic group in Southwestern China.
During this workshop you will be able to learn the traditional techniques for Miao wax drawing with a copper blade tool. You will create your own fabric with a wax resist design to make your own little scarf.
Felt Houseplants

Learn the amazing craft of felt flower making in this two-hour workshop with Hannah Kilby of The Handmade Florist.
Hannah will show you how to create your own mini felt houseplant using beautiful wool-blend felt. You’ll learn useful techniques including how to wrap florist wires and shape your leaves to create a gorgeous plant that needs no watering or sunlight!
All tools and materials are provided, including a range of felt colours to choose from and a mini metal bucket to display your plant in.


Felt Cherry Blossom

Since Hannah launched her Cherry Blossom craft kit last year, it has become one of The Handmade Florist’s bestselling and most-loved kit designs.
In this two-hour workshop, Hannah will teach you everything you need to make your own Cherry Blossom stems using gorgeous wool-blend felt. You’ll learn how to wrap your florist wires, make your blossoms and assemble them into beautiful twisting mini stems.

Terrazzo Homeware

Rosie runs Rosie Glow, creating colourful terrazzo homeware using Jesmonite, a versatile water-based resin.
In these workshops Rosie will guide you through creating terrazzo chips in your choice of colours, before helping you to create your very own coasters or trays to take home.
During the workshop will learn how to sand and finish your pieces, while also exploring some of the many other decorative techniques possible with Jesmonite!

Lampshade Making

Make a 30cm drum lampshade with Kettle of Fish Designs.
Karen has been making lampshades and running workshops for ten years and has lots of tips to help you make a professionally finished lampshade for either a ceiling fitting or a lamp base. This workshop will guide you through the process step by step, from fabric selection to neatly finishing your shade.
You will be provided with all the materials you need to make a lampshade, but can bring along your own fabric if you prefer. It should be no smaller than 1m wide x 26cm high, and should not be either sheer or very thick, or an open weave. If in doubt, bring it along - you will be advised of any potential issues on the day and given a choice of other fabrics if necessary.
Polymer Jewellery

Come and learn how to make a pair of polymer clay hoop earrings or necklace using this versatile clay.

Slate Tile Painting

During this workshop you will create your very own hand painted slate coaster, featuring fruit and floral designs.
This workshop is perfect for the painting novice, guided from start to finish by surface designer Katie Dyer as well as help from your own step by step printed guide.
Firstly, we will experiment with paints on paper, this will help to show how floral and fruit shapes are created, when you follow a few simple step by step instructions. Working on the paper also allows you time to play with colours and will help to inform a colour palette for your final design. We will then move onto working on the slate coaster bases. Slate is an incredibly satisfying material to paint, it dries quickly and its smooth surface allows for easy application, this makes the addition of illustrations with paint such a fun and enjoyable process.
You will leave with a coaster that will bring joy to those daily cuppas and hopefully with an urge to go home and paint a whole set for the dining table
Raku

In this workshop you will learn about, and experience first hand, the exciting process of raku firing. Originating in 16th century Japan, simple tea bowls were made as part of the spiritual zen ritual of the Tea Ceremony, as it is is such an immediate process. Raku has been enthusiastically embraced by western potters and evolved into an art form which now has many admirers.
You will be provided with previously made and bisque fired clay object to design & decorate with coloured raku glazes, and then witness your work being transformed by the fire and smoke into finished ceramics.
Carol has been pit firing and raku firing for many years now, she never tires of the excitement that’s generated by this alchemic process of flame and smoke. It’s always a bit of a challenge to coax exciting results from the hot kiln, but the delight on people’s faces as they scrub off the muck and reveal the treasure underneath, is well worth it!


Punch Needle

Come and join Laura of Laura Gardner Textiles for her beginner's punch needle embroidery workshop. In this session you will be learning how to get started with the beautiful technique of loop stitching with a punch needle tool. You will design and make your own unique piece of punch needle embroidery in a mini hoop.
In her own work, Laura uses punch needling to create colourful, decorative art textile pieces. In this workshop you will be learning and using a combination of the stitched side and the looped side to make textured pieces that showcase the beautiful patterns and textures punch needling can create. The technique is a calming and repetitive one, which allows you to relax and enjoy your creative side, playing with colours, shape and textures.
Willow Garden Obelisk

Leather Craft

Try your hand at working with leather and take home your very own small leather item. During this two hour taster workshop you will be introduced to some basics of this wonderful heritage craft including edge finishing and burnishing, traditional saddle stitch and embossing. You will use high quality vegetable tanned leather and can personalise your item with your choice of thread colour. Walk away with a new skill and see if this is your future calling.
Diamond Awl Leather Workshop practice and teach traditional leatherwork applied to contemporary products. It is founded by Jason Stocks-Young who has featured on the recent Saved and Remade Workshop on Discovery and Made in Great Britain on BBC2. He is a member of The Guild of Master Craftsmen and also sits on the Equity Council at the Crafts Council advising on a wider representation of diversity within the craft sector. Jason has been making leather goods for twelve years and learnt from traditional leatherworkers who share the ethos and passion for using traditional techniques and the finest leathers.
Hanging Basket Planting

Make your own glorious hanging basket to add a splash of colour to your garden or outdoor space to take you through the summer into the autumn months. Ravensworth Nurseries Ltd. will guide you to create a lovely filled wire basket which you will be able to take home. The basket will have a hemp liner and will be filled using a selection of colourful plants. All materials will be provided, including baskets and the plants to fill them. Please bring your own gardening gloves if you require them.
Ravensworth Nurseries Ltd. is a family run business based in Richmond, North Yorkshire. They have been growing and selling plants, veg, flowers and bedding plants at the nurseries for over 58 years. They also offer a range of gardening workshops throughout the year.


Botanical Plaster Relief

Take time out to relax and unwind in nature with Step in the Picture’s Introduction to Botanical Casting workshop.
The workshop begins with a journey through the Gardens at Ormesby Hall, exploring the different plants, their unique shape, structure, and textures.
You will then get hands on with clay to mindfully learn the art of creating a botanical bas-relief. By the end of the workshop you will have made your very own botanical cast as a unique memory of Make & Mend Festival.
Pottery Wheel Experience

Book your own mini pottery throw down!
Saltburn potter, Claude Frere-Smith, will be offering the opportunity for you to have a go at making your own pot.
Using a traditional kick wheel, Claude will guide you through a few basic steps, to making a small pot, which you can take home with you and decorate when it has dried out.
Workshops last 20 minutes (counts as a 1 hour workshop) and places are very limited with only 2 spaces per timeslot. A great way to try throwing a pot with one to one teaching!


Scandi Butterknives

This session is a perfect introduction to the absorbing traditional craft of carving useful objects from green wood using simple tools. Participants use wood carving knives to whittle a Scandinavian butter knife or Smorkniv from freshly cut green wood. There will be a focus on working with the wood grain, enjoying the process, and taking our time. Participants will learn a few different knife grips and there will be a strong emphasis on safety throughout. No woodworking experience is necessary.

Eco Cleaning Products

Learn how to make your own, low-tox cleaning products, with Ruth from EcologicoUK. So many of the cleaning products on supermarket shelves are harmful to people and the planet.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make Ruth’s favourite tried and tested recipes – an all-purpose cleaner and a household scrub powder using a toolkit of simple ingredients that most of us already have in our cupboards at home. You’ll discover what each ingredient is, where it comes from, and why it’s so good at cleaning, and you'll head home with two refillable containers along with the recipes and the skills to make the refills yourself at home!

Introduction to Stained Glass

Participants will learn how to use glass tools to cut and shape glass, they will foil and solder using the Tiffany method. They will be able to to produce a simple leaf shaped sun catcher.
Samantha Yates is the glass artist behind Lil'Rabbitfoot and she believes acts of kindness, love and care are of great value in our lives and creates beautiful glass flowers and foliage to share the emotions of love & joy and show appreciation.
Her flowers are rich in individual character, both naive and fun, revealing her appreciation of the natural environment, the simple beauty of nature and the happiness it can bring.
Working with copperfoil techniques she playfully explores the limitations of her materials and techniques, presenting glass to the light through exploration of different botanical forms, patterns and structures.
